CHAPTER FOURTEEN
SHANE
I spent the day with Winter, teaching her more self-defense moves, then we lay on my bed and watched movies on my laptop. If someone had told me when I was younger that I would end up with Winter Patten in my room, have sex with her, and watch movies, I wouldâve said no fucking way. But there she was, and there we were.
It was time to take Winter back to her dorm so I could leave for dinner with Phoenix, Aspen, and Mom at Grandadâs. With our fingers threaded together, we walked at a slow pace. I didnât want to leave her, but bringing her with me wasnât an option. Not with how Mom felt about her, which was justifiedâuntil I had a chance to explain some things and she gave Winter a chance. But I would not take her to Grandadâs. That would be like throwing her to the wolves.
As we turned the corner and crossed the quad, a feeling of being watched itched across my skin. I glanced over my shoulder and narrowed my eyes when I spotted Cindy about ten feet behind us. She needed to take a hint, and I would clarify how done with her I was.
I released Winterâs hand and wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her against my side. She leaned into me, a perfect fit. Cindy kept pace, slowing when we reached the door to Winterâs building. Before I held it open, I turned her in my arms and took her mouth in a steamy kiss. We were both breathless by the time I reluctantly broke it.
âWhat was that for?â she murmured, her voice raspy with desire.
I ran the pad of my thumb over her full lower lip, wanting to go in for more rather than leave her for a few hours. âBecause I wanted to.â I couldnât give her the whole reason. I did want to kiss her. That urge was always there, but I wanted to put on a show for Cindy. The woman needed to back off and realize we would never happen again.
My fingers curled around the handle of the door, and I pulled it open. With a hand on the small of her back, I followed Winter inside and ensured she got safely to her room.
âLock this behind you, and donât open it for anyone unless you know who it is.â
âOkay, Dad.â Winter rolled her eyes then laughed. âHave a good dinner with your family. And please, donât call your friends about me. Iâll chat with Jaxon and get dinner with him or something.â
âHave him come to your room and pick you up.â
âOh, trust me. Heâll be all over that. He was upset that I didnât call him immediately after everything happened.â
That didnât sound right. âWhy didnât you?â
Her cheeks turned a pretty shade of pink. âI wasnât thinking straight. Also, Jaxon was away for a few days meeting Maxâs parents, and I didnât want to call him all hysterical so he would rush to my side.
